As veterinarians continued their evaluation, they found yet another complication. The diseases had contributed to a blood-clotting disorder that increased the danger of any surgical procedure.

Under different circumstances, surgery might have helped address some of his orthopedic problems. Unfortunately, the risks were simply too high. The veterinary team determined that surgery was not a safe option.

For many organizations, such a long list of medical challenges could have seemed overwhelming. Castagno was elderly, blind, deaf, chronically ill, and physically compromised. Yet the people caring for him refused to see him as a lost cause.

Instead, they focused on what they could do.

A comprehensive treatment plan was created. Every day, caregivers administered medications, monitored his condition, and adjusted treatments when necessary. They paid close attention to his comfort and worked tirelessly to give him the best quality of life possible.
